School Governance

Are you interested in education for young people under the age of 16?  Are you keen to develop a variety of skills that support schools and senior leaders in education?  Do you have between 2-10 hours a month to support the Trust?  Are you keen to join and develop a professional network and meet a variety of different people?  Are you keen to be involved in a volunteer role that is at the heart of its community?  Could you be a Governor?

We are seeking Local Governors for each of our Trust's schools in Hedge End, Botley and Boorley. Governors usually live or work in the neighbourhood served by the school and have a keen interest in the school’s success.

Governors can get a great deal from the work and time they put into the role, from meeting new people to learning new skills. Most importantly you have the chance to help improve the education and life chances of children and young people: the work is extremely rewarding and interesting.

Although the role is voluntary, we do ask for you make a time commitment of six meetings spaced through the academic year and undertake school visits over the year of approximately 10-12 hours. Meetings are held on Monday evenings.

A training programme throughout the year is offered to help you understand the responsibilities of the role and how you can best contribute to the success of the governing team and the school community.

Successful applicants will need to undergo a DBS check and complete a written application.

Skills

Schools need volunteers with a variety of life experiences, however whilst you do not need qualifications to be a governor, governors will need to demonstrate:

• an ability to work in a team and debate issues in a constructive manner • an interest in education and lifelong learning • the capacity to shape, implement and monitor policy • a commitment to participate in training to enhance your effectiveness in the role

Being a governor is a great opportunity for professionals looking to share and improve their business or leadership skills, and we are particularly interested in speaking to people with experience in Finance and Health & Safety.
